Maysville/Mobile Mathematics Intiative (MMI)

MMI-Logo-revised_12-2006.jpgThe Maysville/Mobile Mathematics Initiative (MMI), a multifaceted professional development program for teachers, administrators, and mathematics teacher leaders, has helped produce significant gains in mathematics achievement in the MCPSS over the past six years. Whole schools at the elementary and middle school levels participate in the MMI cohorts of three to four schools. Currently there are 33 MMI schools across Alabama (Decatur, Hoover, and Mobile) with 13 of those in Mobile.

In addition to the school-wide component of MMI, approximately 65 Alabama teachers have either completed or are currently participating in MMI's rigorous Teacher Leadership Program that is part of the Academy for Excellence in Mathematics Education. The purpose of the Academy's Teacher Leadership Program is to develop the capacity needed to support and enhance implementation of school-wide mathematics reform and, as importantly, to sustain those reforms over time. The program involves three years of professional development around K-6 mathematics content and mathematics pedagogy, as well as leadership skills. In the second and third years of the program Academy Teachers participate in a school-based leadership practicum. The Foundation has offered three Teacher Leadership Programs since 2001. The current program includes teachers from Decatur, Hoover, and Mobile.
