The MMI’s Academy for Excellence in Mathematics Education includes several capacity building programs, the most prominent of which is its Teacher Leadership Program. The purpose of the Academy’s Teacher Leadership Program (TLP) is to develop the capacity needed to support and enhance implementation of district-wide mathematics reform and, as importantly, to sustain those reforms over time. The TLP involves three years of professional development around leadership skills, and mathematics content and mathematics pedagogy, both across K-8 grades. The Mobile Area Education Foundation has offered three Teacher Leadership Programs since 2001; each program is identified by the year in which it began. The National Science Foundation funded the development and implementation of the ’01 Teacher Leadership Program; awards from the Alabama State Department of Education NCLB funds are supporting two additional Teacher Leadership Programs: the ’04 TLP and the ’05 TLP. The ’05 TLP was the first to include teacher leaders from districts outside of Mobile (Decatur City Schools and Hoover City Schools), in addition to teachers from Mobile. All three TLP programs have had the same purpose related to capacity building to complement each district’s mathematics reform efforts, primarily in schools involved in school-wide reform.
