2011 Summer Camps

SUNNY SIDE THEATER
Location: Drama and Rising Stars camps are at Murphy High School auditorium, 100 S. Carlen St.

  • Drama Camp is for grades 3 and up. Session 1 is May 31-June 10; Session 2 is June 13-24; Session 3 is June 27-July 8; Session 4 is July 11-22. Each camp will rehearse and perform a full-length show at the end of the two weeks. Cost is $260; each additional session receives a $50 discount.
  • Rising Stars for high school students and veteran campers runs June 6-17. Cost is $185.
  • Drama Camp Junior for PreK-grade 2. Session 1 is June 6-10; Session 2 is June 13-17; Session 3 is June 20-24; Session 4 is July 11-15; Session 6 is July 18-22; Session 7 is July 25-29; Session 8 is Aug. 1-5. Each camp day ends with a performance of a book, nursery rhyme, original play or puppet show. Cost is $125 per session; each additional session received a $25 discount. This camp is at Sunny Side Theater, Spring Hill Shopping Center, at the corner of McGregor and Spring Hill avenues.

Information: Registration fees and non-refundable $50 deposit may be dropped off at Sunny Side Theater. Other activities include set painting, water games, field games and theater games. Fees include costumes, sets, cast gifts, cast party and a T-shirt. Also, there will be a special session at Murphy High School May 31-June 3 from 1 to 5 p.m., for students in grades 2 and up. Activities include theater and outdoor games and a skit the evening of June 3. The $100 fee includes costumes, props, sets and a cast party.  


ROBINSON'S SCHOOL OF DANCE
Location: 920 Dawes Road in west Mobile.
Program: Summer Intensive
Date: June 6-10 for Dawes Road; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: 17257 Jordan St., Chatom.
Program: Summer Intensive
Date: June 13-17; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a lock-in Thursday and pick-up at noon Friday.
Information: For ages 2 and up. Activities include acrobatics, ballet, baton, cheering, jazz, jump and turn, lyrical, modern, performance hair and makeup, musical theater, tap and Zumba. Cost is $100. Lunch, snacks and drinks provided. 251-639-7473.

PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK
Location: 4851 Museum Drive, Langan Park
Program: Summer Theater Crafts Camp
Date: June 6-10 and June 13-17; 9 a.m. to noon
Information: The camp will feature theatre arts such as acting, musical theatre, scenic art, puppetry and dance. Camps are an introductory experience for ages 5-12. Cost is $150 per week or $275 for two weeks with a 10 percent discount for siblings.

PLANET GYMNASTICS
Location: 900 Schillinger Road S.
Program: Summer Camp
Date: May 23-Aug. 12; 7:30 to noon for 3- and 4-year-olds, 7:30 to 5:30 for 5- to 14-year-olds (may also sign up for half-day).
Information: Activities include gymnastics, adventure, sports, challenge, talent and arts. No registration fees. Daily, weekly and monthly rates. Receive a 20 percent discount for siblings.

GULF COAST EXPLOREUM SCIENCE CENTER
Location: 65 Government St.
Program: Science and Technology Camps

  • Wonders of Weather for ages 4 and 5, grades K-2 and 3-5. June 6-10. Learn about seasons, clouds, temperatures and work with a local meteorologist to give the weather forecast in the WKRG newsroom.
  • You Are What You Eat for ages 4 and 5 and grades K-2. June 13-17. Discover how food affects your body, learn the science of food and how to make healthy food choices.
  • Science, Technology and Engineering for grades 6-12. June 13-17. Use safety gear and handle heavy metal. Introduction to technology and engineering. Use cutting-edge software to create engineered art plus have access to the 3D printer to print a working prototype of your original design.
  • Third Rock from the Sun for ages 4 and 5, grades K-2 and 3-5. June 20-25. Explore solar system, volcanoes, mountains, oceans, continents and the inside of the Earth.
  • Wild Things for ages 4 and 5, grades K-2 and 3-5. July 11-15. Exploreum and Environmental Center show native wildlife such as box turtles, screech owls and alligators.
  • All About Science for ages 4 and 5 and grades K-2. July 18-22. Learn about chemistry, physics, biology, perform experiments and meet real scientists.
  • Flight Academy by Airbus for grades 6-12. July 18-22. Discover the world of aviation and even learn to fly. Explore scientific principles of flight, engineering secrets of modern flight crafts and sit in the pilot's seat during a real flying lesson. (Additional fees apply due to flight time and transportation).
  • Spaced Out for ages 4 and 5, grades K-2 and 3-5. Explore the world beyond our planet, Mars, stars, black holes, comets and supernovas.

Information: Ages 4 and 5 have camp on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; grades K-12 Monday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aftercare from 1-4 p.m. is available for an additional $20 per day. Cost for ages 4 and 5 is $45 for members, $60 for non-members; grades K-12 is $140 for members, $170 for non-members. Flight Academy Camp cost is $232 for members, $290 for non-members.


ENGAGING YOUTH IN ENGINEERING (EYE)
Program: Camp Mobile Bay-EYE Gets Wet!!

The Mobile Area Education Foundation is offering four week-long day camps for exiting 4th and 5th grade students in the Engaging Youth through Engineering (EYE) elementary schools: Castlen, Chickasaw, Clark, Collier, Council, Davis, Dickson, Dodge, Fonde, Griggs, Hall, Holloway, Kate Shepard, Maryvale, Meadowlake, and Westlawn. The camps will take place at selected EYE school sites and will be led by teachers from the EYE elementary and middle schools and the Davidson HS EPIC program.

During the camp, students will experience environmental engineering through hands-on, creative investigations and building activities. The goal of each camp is to show students what engineering is all about and to expose them to the fact that "engineers' work" is all around them. The week culminates with an end-of-camp celebration at the Five Rivers Delta Education Center that parents, educators, and business leaders are invited to attend.

Transportation will be provided from the school for field trips to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Mobile Area Water Works System, and the Five Rivers Delta Education Center. Campers pay a $75 registration fee, are required to bring their own lunch each day and are provided an EYE camp t-shirt and daily snacks in addition to the camp program.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES CENTER

Program: 2011 Summer Day Camp

  • The Forest and Me for grades 1-2. June 27-30, 8 a.m. to noon or 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $75. Students will be guided through discovery investigations of the area's natural forest environment.
  • Let's Get Physical with Science for grades 3-4. July 11-14, 8 a.m. to noon; July 18-21, 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $75. Be a part of the wonder, discovery and exploration that is science. Inquiry-based activities that follow the scientific method will help students strengthen critical thinking skills.
  • Investigating the Natural Environment for grades 3-4. July 11-14, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.; July 18-21, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $75.
  • Wonderful World of Nature for grades 5-6. June 13-16, 8 a.m. to noon or June 20-23, 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $75. Camp combines outdoor recreation with environmental education experiences. Activities include hikes, games, fishing contests, aquarium presentations, microscopes and a look at the center's wildlife collection.
  • Feathers to Rockets for grades 5-6. June 13-16, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. or June 20-23, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $75. Explore the science of flight, learn about constellations, go on a field trip to the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center and view a simulation of the STARLAB planetarium.
  • Investigations in Microscopy for grades 6-8. July 25-28, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $75. Students learn the basics of microscopy, from simple magnifiers to digital microscopes. Activities include hands-on sessions, studying pond life, preparing slides, using compound light microscope and stereoscope.

CAMP RAP-A-HOPE
Location

Program: Fun for Kids with Cancer
Date: June 5-11
Information: Free one-week summer camp for children and teenagers 7-17 who are battling cancer or for those who have ever been diagnosed with cancer.

ALABAMA SCHOOL OF MATH AND SCIENCE
Location
: 1255 Dauphin St.
Program: Adventures in Math and Science
Date: Session 1 is June 6-10, an overnight camp. Session 2 is June 13-17, an overnight or day camp. Session 3 is June 20-24, a day camp. Day camp hours are 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Students may sign up for three classes per week and may sign up for one or all three weeks.
Information: Go kayaking, film a zombie movie, design a web site, investigate a crime, prepare for the ACT, make a metal sculpture, learn origami, speak Spanish, create a hologram or launch a rocket. For grades 7-10. Tuition for overnight camp is $375 per week; day camp is $260 per week; weekend between week one and two is an additional $150.
