VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Mobile Area Education Foundation offers a variety of Volunteer Opportunities. We ask that you take a moment to review our volunteer opportunity descriptions and sign-up today.

Workforce Awareness Speaker's Bureau: The Mobile Area Education Foundation, the South Alabama Workforce Development Council, and the Mobile County Public School System are working together on a workforce awareness program that will involve every fourth grade classroom in the school system. We are looking for volunteers throughout the business community who are willing to devote an hour to speak to a class about their occupation. VOLUNTEER!

Partners in Education: Currently, the Partner in Education  Program in Mobile County links over 1,000 businesses, organizations, churches and individuals, who make an annual impact of over $2.3 million to our schools in Mobile County. The PIE Partnerships have one common theme, improving the quality of education in Mobile County for every child. The PIE program is coordinated for the Mobile County Public School System by the Mobile Area Education Foundation. We are seeking volunteers to provide support to a local public school. VOLUNTEER!

AT&T Vital Link: Vital Link is based on the theory that students are best motivated to learn if they understand the connection between skills learned in the class and those needed for success in the workplace. A select group of eighth grade middle school students and teachers spend half-a-day for a week as interns in Mobile businesses to experience the importance of communication skills, mathematics, creativity, problem solving and teamwork. We need businesses to provide internships for eighth grade students. There are no costs incurred by participating businesses. VOLUNTEER!

Engaging Youth in Engineering: A critical component of EYE is the involvement of business and industry volunteers, as well as engineering students from the University of South Alabama, both to assist teachers as they implement the engineering curriculum and mini-units and to mentor students.  Research is clear that the likelihood of a student choosing to be an engineer is greatly enhanced when there is an engineer in the immediate family or when the student has had exposure to engineers as mentors. VOLUNTEER!

Yes We Can: The Yes We Can Initiative is all about building on the energy of the 2001 VOTE YES campaign to define a new direction for Mobile County and our schools by enlisting the help of citizens to identify priorities and push for improvements. We will need volunteers beginning January 2009 as we inform and build community support for the 2011 referendum to renew the ad valorem tax earmarked for schools that voters approved in 2001. VOLUNTEER!

RAMP: The Research Alliance for Multiple Pathways (RAMP) for Mobile's Youth, a county-wide partnership of individuals who have expertise in serving Mobile's Youth funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. The City of Mobile is creating the RAMP for Mobile's youth in response to the unacceptable cohort dropout rate of 50.3%. Efforts will be focused on engaging youth in career preparation and encouraging them to pursue postsecondary education. VOLUNTEER!
